Sydney's opera is perhaps the most emblematic building, but our favorite is the Bay Bridge. Anyway no doubt that it fascinating and very photogenic. The best views are from the botanical garden, from donating the two icons of the city overlap and you do have to choose between one and the other

Sydney in the 40's was a great city, but without any great theater to host major events such as an opera or a symphony orchestra concert ... but apparently not this was something interesting to "Sydneysiders". There were many more small theaters which incidentally retain only a couple of them, but that's another story and has this habit fucking people down first and complain later.

Anyway, finally in 1955 they decided to hold a competition for a building to house two concert halls and a bigger one for chamber music. Be built on the site occupied by the strong McQuarie that poer course had to be demolished.


233 projects were presented. In 1957 he was chosen to Danish architect John Utzon. Apparently was the only project that put the two rooms next to each other and looking over the bay, rather than creating a wall between it and the city. And that was not included among the 30 finalists, and was fished out of a miracle. Here is the architect in question with their model.

The present project when the competition was very innovative and revolutionary but it was a sketch for a manner of speaking. To pull it off there were many difficulties and I had to develop techniques that did not exist ... and are still used today in architecture. But to realize this project cost 20 times more than planned and 20 years instead of 10 to erect. At a certain point the cost was the centerpiece of local elections and local politicians to eventually remove the title of chief architect, to which this repondio leave the country ... never saw his work completed.


From a distance it appears that the "shells" are solid but is distinguished by that is composed of tiles, which incidentally is manufactured in Sweden.
